Talk at the University Mozarteum

I had the opportunity to participate in the SOMA conference at the Mozarteum University on Kultursensible Aneignung (Culturally Sensitive Appropriation), where I presented my work on the intercultural perspectives of Turkish-German bilingualism in Germany. The event featured many exciting presentations and discussions on cultural appropriation in educational contexts.

I began my talk with the question: Can music truly build bridges between people and cultures? I approached this critically, acknowledging that, unfortunately, music is not free from hierarchical structures and power dynamics. Nevertheless, I still believe in music’s potential to foster connection and understanding—provided that we engage in self-reflection about our power positions and privileges while carefully considering both historical and contemporary contexts.
